Who We Are

Meet Andrew Westfall

Founder of Watson’s Retreat

Born in 1990 in Tacoma, Washington, Andrew Westfall grew up with a deep love for animals and the natural world. Inspired by childhood heroes like Steve Irwin and the animated Wild Thornberrys (for all the '90s kids out there), his passion for animals started young and never wavered. From the moment he could walk, Andrew was exploring, observing, and connecting with nature in any way he could.

As he entered adulthood, life presented its share of struggles. But through those tough times, one constant helped guide him back to his purpose: his beloved dog Anubis, whom he brought home at just 12 weeks old. With Anubis by his side, Andrew rediscovered his path and found his calling in veterinary medicine.

For over a decade, Andrew worked in the veterinary field in various roles, dedicating himself to the health and wellbeing of countless animals. While he found deep fulfillment in his work, the emotional toll of emergency veterinary care eventually led him to reevaluate how he could best serve both animals and their families.

Andrew realized his next chapter would involve not just caring for dogs—but connecting with them in a more personal, enriching way. He immersed himself in dog training and behavior, gaining valuable experience and deepening his bond with dogs on a whole new level.

That journey led to the creation of Watson’s Retreat—a place born from love, dedication, and a desire to serve the Pierce County community. Co-founded with his longtime friend Joon Kim, Watson’s Retreat is named in honor of a loyal companion and inspired by every dog that left a paw print on Andrew’s heart. Together, Andrew and Joon built a safe, enriching environment where dogs are treated like family.

“We hope you’ll entrust us with your four-legged companions while you're away. It’s our mission to provide your furry family members with the love, care, and attention they deserve—because at Watson’s Retreat, your dog isn’t just a guest. They’re part of our pack.”

Meet Joon Kim

Founder of Watson’s Retreat

Born in 1984 in Bakersfield, California, Joon Kim has spent his life surrounded by animals. A lifelong animal lover, Joon’s passion for dogs began with his first beloved companion, Deuce. That bond led him to pursue professional training, eventually completing an apprenticeship and becoming a skilled and confident dog trainer.

Joon went on to open One Command K9, where he specialized in working with reactive and aggressive dogs, helping countless families build stronger relationships with their pets. His dedication to the community and commitment to compassionate care made him a trusted name in training and boarding.

After years of hands-on work, Joon felt inspired to shift his focus away from training and toward providing high-quality, enrichment-based care. Alongside his longtime friend Andrew Westfall, he co-founded Watson’s Retreat—a premium boarding experience built on trust, comfort, and love.

At Watson’s Retreat, Joon and Andrew have created a welcoming space where dogs can relax, play, and thrive. Together, they continue to serve the same community they’ve always supported, now with an even deeper focus on personalized care and well-being for every dog that walks through the door.
